Behavioral Psychology

The study of the human behavior has become one of the most important tools of improvement in the society. Behaviorism is the theory of learning based in the idea that all behaviors are acquired through conditioning, the behaviorism theory emphasizes that change in behavior result from stimulus – response. This theory was originated with Ivan Pavlov when he started using classical conditioning in the 20th century, and was later expanded by B.F. Skinner with the reinforcement and punishment concepts. The contributions made by both Pavlov and Skinner still affecting what its psychology in the actuality. People’s reasons for divorcing

Nowadays we often listen to people speaking about the alarming divorce rates during past few years.  So I decide to read about the topic, during my research I found an experiment titled “People’s Reasons for Divorcing”, which catch my attention. The experiment was published in the Journal of Family Issues, and directed by Paul.R Amato and Denise Previti. The research was based on a 17-year longitudinal study, the population selected consisted of married individuals both spouse 55 years old or younger, with a telephone. In 1980 random telephone dialing was used to select a sample of households 78% of the people gave a complete interview. The same sample was contacted again in 1983, 1988, 1992 and 1997, between 1980 and 1997, 274 people reported that their marriage result in divorce, but only 208 share the reasons why they attributed their marriage to end. The participants who divorced during the interviews were asked “What do you think caused the divorce?” After the open-ended responses were collected this were analyzed and but into categories. The conclusion drawn after the experiment attributed infidelity as the number one cause of divorce reported by the participants. Along with infidelity other reasons were reported such as, growing apart, personality clashes, and lack of communication. Another commonly reported issues associate with the cause of divorce were drinking, drugs abuse, mental cruelty and physical abuse. Part of the hypothesis predicted that men were more likely than women to attribute the cause of divorce to external problems. The experiment was directed to find out which was the more reported cause of divorce, and the conclusion drawn by the researches reflected a clear answer, I agree with the conclusion. Nowadays we see how most of the marriages end up in divorce. Even though this research was directed from 1980 through 1997, I think it has relevance to the society in which we live in today. We still making the mistakes we made during the past decades, a clear example of that is instead of decreasing the divorce rate still increasing.  The only difference is that people see divorce as more acceptable than they used before. Infidelity, drug abuse  and so on will always exist, and will continue to tear people apart if individuals don’t stop, and analyzed  before making the decision of getting marry. Now that I have share my opinion I would like to know yours.Do you agree or disagree with the results?  and What do you believe we as a society have to change in order to have long lasting marriages ?

The impact of relationship dissolution on mental health

Have you ever thought about the psychological impact of ending a romantic relationship?   At some point in life we pass through a break up, usually right after the break up you might feel sad, depressed or confuse depending on your personality .But that’s just the surface of the real impact of the break up, for some people the end of a relationship can be more devastating than others. In some cases the people suffer from psychological distress, and the life satisfaction level decreases. I found an interesting research in the Journal of Family Psychology, they published the result of an experiment that they called: The impact of unmarried relationship dissolution on mental health and life satisfaction. The participants of the study were 63% female and 37% males, the strategy used to recruit participants involved calling telephones on a sampling list based from public records. The participants were interviewed over the phone. The research team was looking for people between 18 and 34 years old, and be in an unmarried relationship with a member of the opposite sex that had lasted two months or longer. The ones that fulfill these criteria and agree to participate receive a mailed survey. The participants complete surveys during 20-months, every four months they receive a survey in order to follow their mental health state. The survey have questions such as, “if I could live my life over, I would change almost nothing” the participants have to rate it with a scale from 1 to 7. The purpose of the experiment is to determinate the impact of unmarried relationship after a breakup on the mental health and life satisfaction of the individuals. The hypothesis of the experiment was divided in three sections, the first part of the hypothesis was that psychological distress will increase and life satisfaction will decline following the dissolution of a romantic relationship. The second part of the hypothesis was that, relationship duration, living together, having plans for marriage, sharing a child and continues contact with an ex-partner will be associate with larger increase in psychological distress and large decline in life satisfaction pre to post dissolution. The third part of the hypothesis was that wanting to break up, low pre-dissolution relationship quality, and dating someone new will associated with smaller increase in psychological distress and smaller declines in life satisfaction pre- to post dissolution. The results of the experiments for section one of the hypotheses indicated that was correct, psychological distress increases and life satisfaction declines the romantic relationship end. The second section of the hypothesis was that relationship duration, living together, having plans for marriage, sharing a child and continues contact with an ex-partner will be associate with larger increase in psychological distress and large decline in life satisfaction pre to post dissolution however, the results show that none of this variables were significant predictors of psychological distress after a break up. In addition to this the results show that for life satisfaction, living together and having plans for the future were associated with the decline following after the break up. The third hypothesis was that wanting to break up, low pre-dissolution relationship quality, and dating someone new will associated with smaller increase in psychological distress and smaller declines in life satisfaction pre- to post dissolution. The results show that none of these variables were connected with psychological distress changes. If you want to read the whole experiment in more detail click on this website . Share your thoughts, do you relate with the results obtained in this research?

What is the first thing that comes to once mind when the word aggression is mention? Many related to bullying, frustration, and revenge nevertheless aggression is a deeper problem .Nowadays aggression is practice via social networks more often and it has become common and acceptable in society especially among teenagers .A long with the increase use of social networks usages during the past few years the practice of aggression has also increase in the internet. There exist theories of the nature of aggression, for example biological factors, and the social learning perspective theory.  Psychologist throughout the years had discussed the idea of humans being innately aggressive. Nowadays the social learning perspective is a modern concept which states that aggressive behavior is learn. According with this theory the aggressive behavior is acquired by observing others or experience.  What do you think? Are humans innately aggressive? Or the aggressive behavior is learned?
